Emotional eating is a common and under-appreciated cause of weight gain, as we discussed in our previous article “What is Emotional Eating?”You can manage your reaction to the emotional event using some simple, time-honored dietary techniques.

Mindful Eating

Mindful eating is to be aware of what, how much and why we are eating. We don’t necessarily change it, but we need to accept it. Mindfulness based treatments are highly effective for weight loss with an average weight loss of 4.2 kg (9.3 pounds). More stunning is that average weight loss increased over the follow up period to 9.2kg (20 pounds)! Another meta-analysis estimated that mindful eating reduce weight by 6.8 pounds on average and 7.5 pounds at follow up.

Eating mindlessly leaves you out of control. If you are not aware of something, how can you control it? Mindful eating is to eat consciously, to be aware of homeostatic hunger, but also of the associated pleasure of eating and trying to manage both. Be aware of both what and why you are eating…
