Do UPFs make you fat? Hell, yes.

An influential 2019 study drew international attention to the outsized role of UPFs in obesity. Twenty participants ate either minimally processed foods or UPFs with contained the same nutrients — sugar, fat, protein, sodium, carbohydrates and fiber and allowed to eat as much or as little as they liked for the 14 days of each diet. What happened?
The people eating the UPF diet
1. Ate about 500 calories more per day — mostly carbs and fat
2. Ate faster — about 40% faster in kcal/minute
3. Ate about the same levels of protein
4. Gained 1.4 kg (3 pounds) more weight
5. Increased insulin effect, as measured by C-peptide
6. Increased respiratory quotient (indicating body is mostly burning carbs)
7. Burned about 171 extra calories per day
