Focusing on calories does not lead to weight loss. Many ‘experts’ focus myopically on calories with the mistaken belief that ‘it’s all about calories’ because the energy balance equation says:

This can be rewritten as:

This is technically true, just as Alcohol In > Alcohol Out leads to drunkenness/ alcoholism. However, stating the solution to worldwide alcoholism is just to drink less alcohol, or metabolize more alcohol is ridiculous. Or to say that ‘it’s all about the alcohol’ or ‘it’s all about alcohol in versus alcohol out’ is stupid. Why? Because you need to understand WHY Alcohol In > Alcohol Out.

For example, if a person is depressed and therefore drinking too much alcohol, then the solution is to treat the depression, not simply harangue somebody to ‘drink less alcohol’, and that it’s just a matter of mind over matter. Yet the exact same logic applies to calories in/ calories out. But in this case, instead of being recognized as simplistic, puerile and completely ineffective, it’s lauded as an inevitable truth.
